District Correspondent, Sylhet: Zakaria Ahmed (35), the prime suspect in the murder of his younger brother, has been arrested four days after the incident in Companiganj, Sylhet. Zakaria, a resident of Bagjur Uttarpara village, is the son of deceased Ashik Mia. The victim, Ehiya, was his younger brother.
Police arrested Zakaria on Friday morning around 8:30 AM from the Durgapur area in Ishakalas Union of Companiganj Upazila.
According to police sources, on the night of April 28, around 9:15 PM, an argument between the brothers escalated, leading Zakaria to attack his younger brother Rubel Ahmed Yahia (25) with a pair of scissors. Zakaria fled the scene after the attack. Yahia was rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead around 10:30 PM.
Following the incident, the victim’s wife, Khadija Begum, filed a murder case at the police station, naming Zakaria as the sole accused. Zakaria was arrested under this case.
According to the victim’s family, Rubel Ahmed had married Khadija Begum only eight months prior to the incident. The dispute over money eventually led Zakaria to kill his younger brother.
Companiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Uzair Al Mahmud confirmed the arrest and stated that, based on Zakaria’s information, the weapon used in the murder—a pair of scissors—was recovered from behind his house.
