Uncertainty Resolved: DC Hill to Host Bangla New Year Celebration on a Smaller Scale

Staff Correspondent: The ongoing uncertainty surrounding the Bangla New Year celebration at DC Hill in Chattogram has largely been resolved. Although previous years saw the event celebrated with great enthusiasm, the district administration has granted permission to organize the program on a smaller scale this year. The confirmation came from Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Farida Khanam.

For the past 50 years, the Bangla New Year’s Eve and New Year celebrations at DC Hill have been a cherished tradition in Chattogram. Even under strict surveillance by military governments, city residents participated in this festive event. This year marks the 48th edition of the celebration.

Regarding the event, Deputy Commissioner Farida Khanam stated, “The intelligence report is not positive. Considering everything, permission has been granted to organize the celebration on a smaller scale. Security will be a priority in organizing the event.”

It is reported that the event will start at 7:00 AM or 7:30 AM on April 14 and must conclude between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM.

Cultural activists in Chattogram noted that the DC Hill New Year celebration is usually a two-day event. It begins in the evening of New Year’s Eve and continues from morning to evening on New Year’s Day. Except for the two years affected by the pandemic, this celebration has persisted despite numerous challenges.

Event Organizing Committee Member-Secretary Md. Ali remarked, “Even during the Ershad regime, we defied opposition to hold the New Year celebrations. This event is our tradition, and we must preserve it.”
