District Correspondent, Sylhet: Students of Sunamganj Medical College have launched an indefinite class boycott program, demanding the immediate opening of the hospital and adequate ward facilities.
The program began on Tuesday morning. At 8 AM, students held a human chain on the college premises. Students from the second, third, and fourth batches participated in the demonstration.
The students stated that due to the absence of an associated hospital, they are unable to receive practical education. Currently, they are practicing at Sunamganj Sadar Hospital, which lacks sufficient facilities, causing significant challenges.
Fourth-batch students Protiraj and Shah Poran said, “Although academic activities at Sunamganj Medical College started in the 2020–21 academic year, the absence of a hospital deprives students of clinical education. Moreover, the lack of ward facilities, transportation, medical equipment, and other resources is creating obstacles in official and administrative activities. These issues have led the students to protest.”
Meanwhile, during the program, the college principal, Dr. Mostak Ahmed Bhuiyan, visited the protesting students in an attempt to persuade them to return to class. However, the students did not respond to his request, despite his invitation to discuss their demands.
Principal Dr. Mostak Ahmed Bhuiyan stated, “Discussions are ongoing with the authorities regarding the students’ two-point demands. Efforts are also being made to bring them back to class as soon as possible.”
