Four Fishermen Abducted by Arakan Army from Naf River in Teknaf

Mohammad Khorshed Helali, Cox’s Bazar

Four fishermen were abducted by the Myanmar-based armed insurgent group, the Arakan Army (AA), from the Naf River in Teknaf’s Dumdumia area. The incident occurred on Thursday morning (May 1) near the Lal Dwip area of the Naf River.

The abducted fishermen are Arafat Ullah (21), Anis Ullah (22), Md. Jaber (14), and Anwar Sadeq (27). All of them are residents of Camp No. 27 in Jadimura, Teknaf.

Confirming the incident, Mohammad Nur, a leader (Majhi) of the Jadimura Rohingya Camp, said, “As usual, the fishermen went fishing with barrel rafts in the Dumdumia area of the Naf River. At that time, members of the Arakan Army came from Myanmar, held the fishermen at gunpoint, and abducted them along with their boat. However, several other fishermen managed to escape. The authorities have been informed about the matter.”

Local fisherman Mohammad Alam said, “The fishermen constantly live in fear because of the Arakan Army. Incidents of abduction happen frequently. Today, we received the news that four fishermen were taken away.”

Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sheikh Ehsan Uddin said, “We have received reports about the abduction of fishermen. The matter is being investigated.”
