Former Environment Minister Shahab Uddin’s bank accounts frozen over corruption allegations

Barolekha(Moulvibazar) Correspondent:

A court has ordered the freezing (blocking) of eight bank accounts in the names of former Forest and Environment Minister Moulvibazar-1 (Barolekha-Juri) MP Shahab Uddin and his family due to corruption allegations. These accounts contain Tk 81,28,367. At the same time, the court also ordered the attachment of five kathas of land worth Tk 32,39,000 in the name of Shahab Uddin in Uttara, the capital.

The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md. Zakir Hossain Galib passed the order on Tuesday (August 19) following an application by the ACC. On that day, the agency’s Deputy Director Md. Alamgir Hossain applied on behalf of the ACC for the freezing of these bank accounts and attachment of plots.

The petition states that during the investigation into the allegations of embezzlement of government funds by the former minister and his son Zakir Hossain Jumon through various irregularities and corruption, information about these accounts was found in their names. There is a huge amount of money deposited in the accounts. The matter is unusual and suspicious.

It has become clear during the investigation that there is a possibility of withdrawing this money at any time and smuggling/hiding it abroad. In the interest of fair investigation, it is necessary to block (freeze) the 8 accounts currently standing at 81,28,367/- Taka as per Section 14 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act 2012. At the same time, an attachment order must be issued to prevent the transfer of the five katha land of Uttara in the name of Shahab Uddin to another place.
