A. F. M. Asad Ullah: Acting District and Sessions Judge Mahmudul Hasan has emphasized that access to justice is a constitutional right of every citizen. He noted that due to economic disparities and other complexities, many people are often deprived of justice. Therefore, ensuring justice for the underprivileged is imperative.
On Monday, he made these remarks during a discussion meeting held at the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court’s conference room in Sylhet, following a rally to commemorate National Legal Aid Day 2025.
Highlighting the enactment of the Legal Aid Services Act in 2000 to ensure equality before the law for all citizens, Mahmudul Hasan stated that providing legal aid is not merely a professional duty but a moral, humanitarian, and religious obligation. He urged panel lawyers to fulfill this responsibility diligently.
He further added that since 2013, April 28 has been observed as National Legal Aid Day at the national, district, and grassroots levels. Expressing gratitude to the National Legal Aid Organization for recognizing Pallabi Roy from Sylhet District Legal Aid Committee as the best lawyer in Bangladesh, he urged panel lawyers to maintain this streak of excellence. He also expressed hope that Sylhet Legal Aid would surpass other districts and emerge as the best legal aid office in Bangladesh.
Other speakers at the event included Aid and Labor Court Chairman (District and Sessions Judge) Nurul Alam Muhammad Nipu, Divisional Special Judge Shahadat Hossain Pramanik, Chief Judicial Magistrate A. N. M. Ilyas, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Abu Obaida, Metropolitan Sessions Judge Rajib Kumar, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development and Human Resource Management) Padmasan Singh, and Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Md. Rafiqul Islam, among others.
Like previous years, this year as well, various initiatives have been taken to observe “National Legal Aid Day-2025” with due dignity at the national, district, and local levels. The theme for this year’s day is: “There is no joy in conflict, resolve it amicably; Legal Aid is here to help, no need to worry.”
