Distribution of Free Aus Seeds and Fertilizers to Marginal Farmers in Borolekha

Borolekha-Juri Correspondent: The Department of Agriculture in Borolekha Upazila, Moulvibazar, has distributed high-yielding (Ufshi) varieties of Aus paddy seeds and chemical fertilizers to 3,100 small and marginal farmers.

On Wednesday (April 16), under the incentive program for the fiscal year 2024-25 and the Kharif-1/2025-26 season, the distribution of these improved seeds and fertilizers was inaugurated by the acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Assistant Commissioner (Land), Mohammad Aslam Sarwar. He also delivered the keynote speech at a meeting organized by the Borolekha Agricultural Extension Department.

The event, held at the Upazila Agricultural Training Hall, was presided over by Upazila Agriculture Officer Agriculturist Md. Monowar Hossain and conducted by Deputy Agricultural Officer Ruhel Ahmed.

Agricultural Extension Officer Rasheduzzaman Bin Hafez gave the welcome address. Among others who spoke were the General Secretary of Borolekha Press Club, journalist Abdur Rob; Agricultural Sub-Assistant Nabil Khan; journalist Mohammad Mostafa Uddin; and agricultural entrepreneur Zakir Hossain.

Each farmer was provided with 5 kilograms of paddy seeds, 10 kilograms of DMP fertilizer, and 10 kilograms of MOP fertilizer free of charge to cultivate 1 bigha of land.

This season, the target for Aus paddy cultivation has been set at 3,100 bighas of land in 10 unions and one municipality in Borolekha Upazila. Various farmer-friendly government initiatives, including the free distribution of Aus seeds and fertilizers to marginal farmers, are working towards achieving this target.

Additionally, the tireless efforts of field-level agricultural officers and the effective dissemination of the benefits of Aus cultivation among farmers have contributed to an increase in cultivation compared to previous years.

If weather conditions remain favorable, the Borolekha Agricultural Extension Department expects to produce 406,500 maunds of Aus paddy this year.
