In connection with the murder of a day laborer over an extramarital affair in Madhabpur, Habiganj, a court has sentenced four individuals to death. The convicts are Emran Mia, son of Mohammad Ali, Soleman Mia, son of Maraz Mia, Zahed Mia, son of the late Hormuz Ali, all from Bar Chandura village, and Abul Mia, son of Moula Mia, from Muradpur village.
The verdict was delivered on Wednesday afternoon by Additional District and Sessions Judge (2) AKM Kamal Uddin of Habiganj.
The judge ordered each of the convicts to be hanged to death and imposed a fine of Tk 50,000 on each. The convicts were present in court during the verdict and were later sent to the district jail. Another accused in the case, Maraz Mia, was relieved of charges as he had already passed away.
According to the case details provided by the court’s bench assistant Tapan Singh, an extramarital relationship between one of the accused and the wife of day laborer Sabu Mia, son of Lal Mia from Bar Chandura village, led to the murder. On April 13, 2009, Sabu was killed, and his body was dumped in a forested area. Following the incident, Sabu’s brother Hafiz Mia filed a murder case against three individuals. On May 21 of the same year, Madhabpur Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Alamgir Hossain submitted a charge sheet against five accused. After nearly 16 years and testimony from 13 witnesses, the court delivered its verdict.
The plaintiff, Hafiz Mia, who was present in court, expressed his satisfaction with the verdict, stating, “It was an arduous 16-year journey managing this case. My brother, the victim, was a simple and honest man. I am satisfied with the judgment.”
