In Sunamganj, a bumper yield of Boro paddy has been achieved this season. Farmers in 10 haors of the district have already begun harvesting the ripened paddy ahead of the Bengali New Year (Pahela Baishakh), spreading joy among them.
It is widely known that Sunamganj is considered the Boro paddy hub of the country. This paddy sustains the annual food needs of the region, with a significant portion sold to support children’s education, weddings, and household expenses. The paddy harvest invigorates the haor-based marginal economy. This season, Sunamganj has seen a record-breaking harvest of Boro paddy.
According to the District Agriculture Department, Boro paddy has been cultivated across 223,410 hectares of land in 137 haors. This is expected to produce 924,413 metric tons of rice, with an estimated market value of approximately Tk 4,500 crore.
Farmer Raj Uddin of Korchar Haor expressed his happiness, saying that the excellent yield this year has brought immense joy to the farmers.
Another farmer, Swapan Kumar Barman, said, “This year, the paddy has grown well. We are able to harvest it and store it before the Bengali New Year. It feels amazing to finally reap the fruits of our hard labor.”
Farmer Rahmat Mia commented, “If haor farmers get an additional month, the entire paddy harvest from the haor region can be completed.”
Acting Officer of the District Agricultural Extension Department, Mostafa Iqbal Azad, said, “The yield of Boro paddy in Sunamganj has been excellent this year. However, we are advising farmers at the field level to begin harvesting only when 80% of the crop has ripened.”
Officially, paddy harvesting in Sunamganj’s 137 haors will commence on Pahela Baishakh. According to agricultural department sources, an agricultural advisor may be present at the harvest festival.
