Boatman Dies in Lightning Strike in Fenchuganj

District Correspondent, Sylhet: Md. Jilal Mia (40), a boatman from Fenchuganj Upazila, tragically lost his life in a sudden lightning strike. The deceased, Jilal Mia, was the son of Mashim Mia from Bagmara (West) village in Fenchuganj Union. He was a father of two sons and one daughter.

The incident occurred on Tuesday around 9:00 AM on the Kushiyara River.

Local sources reported that Jilal Mia operated an engine boat. Around 8:30 AM, he was ferrying passengers from Ujan Gangapur Ghat to Fenchuganj Bazar. Suddenly, a loud lightning strike struck Jilal Mia, killing him instantly. The other passengers on the boat remained unharmed. Jilal Mia was rushed to Fenchuganj Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Dr. Ripon, in charge of the hospital’s emergency department, stated that Jilal Mia was brought to the hospital around 9:30 AM after being struck by lightning. His body was severely burnt, with visible injuries in multiple places. Dr. Ripon confirmed that he had died on the spot.

Fenchuganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Moniruzzaman Khan said that Jilal Mia had gone out to operate his boat as usual. During a rainstorm, a sudden lightning strike occurred, killing him instantly. He also mentioned that further legal procedures are underway.
