Mohammad Khorshed Helali, Cox’s Bazar
The incident took place on Sunday (May 4) at around 9:30 PM at the Kutupalong Transit Camp in Ukhiya.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ukhiya Police Station, Mohammad Arif Hossain, confirmed the matter.
He said that on Sunday night at around 9:30 PM, some Rohingya youths at the Kutupalong Rohingya Transit Camp pulled the burqa of a female APBn police officer from behind and started harassing her as she was returning with her colleagues after an internal briefing. When her husband, police officer Shakil Ahmed, along with a few other colleagues, protested, the youths verbally abused them in offensive language.
At one point, when the police attempted to take the youths in for questioning, their family members and other residents of the transit camp became agitated and began pelting stones and bricks at the police box. Additionally, a scuffle broke out between the two parties. Later, senior police officers arrived to quell the clash and pacify the agitated Rohingyas.
He further stated that legal action would be taken against those involved if complaints are received regarding the incident.
