Mohammad Khorshed Helali, Cox’s Bazar:
A youth died of electrocution while attempting to steal a water pump in Chakaria, Cox’s Bazar. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday night at Oli’s Baper Para in the Purba Bara Vewla Union of Chakaria.

Police and local residents claim that the youth was electrocuted while trying to steal a water pump from a residential house.

The deceased youth has been identified as Abdul Mannan, a resident of Saharbil Union in the upazila. According to local sources, there were two water pumps at the house of Badsha Mia in Oli’s Baper Para—one located outside and the other inside the kitchen of the residence. After stealing the pump outside, Mannan was electrocuted while attempting to steal the one inside the kitchen, resulting in his death on the spot.

Local Union Parishad member Kafil Uddin said, “Around 5:00 AM, the homeowner informed me. Upon reaching the spot, I found Mannan’s body lying face down with both hands on the pump. Later, I called emergency services at 999, and the police arrived to recover the body.”

Police stated that Abdul Mannan was a professional thief and had previously faced mob beatings on several occasions for theft. He also served time in jail for theft-related cases.

Chakaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shafiqul Islam said, “The body has been sent to the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Preliminary investigations suggest that the youth died of electrocution while attempting to steal the water pump.”
