District Correspondent, Sylhet: The president and general secretary of the banned organization Chhatra League of Zakiganj Upazila, along with 26 leaders and activists of Awami League’s affiliated organizations, have surrendered to the court. The individuals who surrendered were accused in five cases related to the anti-discrimination student and public movement. Earlier, they had been on an eight-week bail granted by the High Court. On Monday, they surrendered to the court as per the conditions of their bail, but their bail applications were rejected, and they were sent to jail.
On Monday afternoon, the accused appeared at the Senior District and Sessions Judge’s Court in Sylhet to surrender and apply for bail. However, Judge Sheikh Ashfaqur Rahman rejected their bail applications and ordered them to be sent to jail.
Meanwhile, the surrendering leaders and activists faced harassment from an agitated crowd outside the court. The police had to intervene and disperse the angry mob to control the situation.
It is reported that during the anti-discrimination student movement, four cases were filed in Zakiganj, Sylhet, regarding attacks on students and the public. These cases named more than a thousand leaders and activists from Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League, and other organizations as defendants.
Plaintiff Jahangir Alam Ripon stated that out of the approximately 250 accused in his case, including 48 named individuals, three had secured bail from the High Court. On Monday, they surrendered to the Sylhet court and applied for bail, but none of their applications were granted.
Public Prosecutor (PP) Ashiq Uddin of Sylhet District and Sessions Judge’s Court confirmed the matter, stating that 26 defendants in five cases surrendered to the court and applied for bail. However, the court rejected their bail applications and ordered them to be sent to jail.
