A.F.M. Asad Ullah: Bishwanath, Sylhet—A 17-year-old girl was allegedly assaulted under the pretext of marriage in Dashpaika village of Daulatpur Union on Saturday night (May 3).
The victim filed a complaint on Sunday (May 4) at Bishwanath Police Station, accusing Mujahid Ali (35), a local resident, of the crime. Police arrested the accused the same night from his home. He is the son of Nazib Ullah from Dashpaika village.
According to police and local sources, the girl met Mujahid Ali about a month ago while visiting her maternal grandfather’s house in Mirgaon village. Mujahid, who has a daughter from a previous marriage, reportedly concealed his identity, introducing himself as Jubair Ahmad to gain the girl’s trust.
On the evening of May 3, Mujahid allegedly took the girl on an outing in Bishwanath Municipality and later brought her to his home. The victim stated that she was assaulted that night. The following morning, Mujahid reportedly left her near her house.
Under pressure from her family, the girl disclosed the incident, leading to the filing of the complaint. Further investigation revealed Mujahid’s true identity and his previous marital status.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Enamul Haque Chowdhury of Bishwanath Police Station confirmed the arrest, stating, “The accused has been detained and will be presented before the court on Monday.”
