Mohammad Khorshed Helali, Cox’s Bazar

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has arrested a youth named Kamal Hossain (42) with 110,000 yaba pills from the waters of the Naf River along the Teknaf border in Cox’s Bazar after chasing a Myanmar vessel.

Lieutenant Colonel Ashiqur Rahman, Commander of Teknaf-2 BGB, confirmed the incident on Sunday (May 4).

The arrestee, Kamal Hossain (42), is the son of late Abdul Amin from Sudapara Deilpara in Maungdaw, Myanmar.

Lieutenant Colonel Ashiqur Rahman of Teknaf-2 BGB stated that intelligence reports revealed that a large consignment of drugs was being smuggled into Bangladesh via the Naf River from Myanmar. Acting on this information, special BGB patrol boats were strategically deployed in various locations on the Naf River early Sunday morning.

During the operation, the patrol team spotted suspicious movements of a boat on the river. When the Myanmar vessel was chased, it retreated further into Myanmar’s territorial waters. Subsequently, two swimmers carrying drugs were identified in the Naf River. The BGB patrol team managed to capture one of the drug carriers along with 110,000 yaba pills. However, under the cover of darkness, the other carrier managed to swim back to the Myanmar side.

The arrested individual and the seized drugs have been handed over to Teknaf Model Police Station following proper legal procedures.

Lieutenant Colonel Ashiqur Rahman added that the BGB remains vigilant in preventing drugs, illegal arms, smuggling, and all forms of unlawful activities along the border. He emphasized that under a zero-tolerance policy, BGB will continue to conduct effective operations to ensure national and border security in the future.
