Barlekha-Juri Correspondent: Police have arrested Muhibur Rahman Kamal, the former acting chairman of Dakshinbhag Dakshin Union in Barlekha Upazila, Moulvibazar, from his residence. On Wednesday afternoon, he was sent to jail through the court as a suspect in a political case.
Kamal stepped down from his position as acting chairman on July 27 last year to participate in the UP chairman by-election. However, the Election Commission postponed the by-election due to a curfew imposed to prevent violence during the country’s quota reform movement at the time.
Meanwhile, although the police claim that Muhibur Rahman Kamal is an active member of the Awami League, his family and local residents assert that he is not affiliated with Awami League politics. They claim that Kamal was once involved with the Jatiya Party but became inactive in politics after being elected as a UP member and panel chairman.
Locals allege that an individual named Muhibur Rahman, who was a member of the Union Committee of the Awami League about ten years ago, passed away long ago. However, due to local disputes, rivals provided false information to the police, leading to Kamal’s arrest on Tuesday night at his residence, falsely identifying him as an Awami League leader.
Concerns have been raised that the police often arrest innocent individuals under political cases, citing them as unidentified suspects in investigations. Similarly, former acting UP chairman Muhibur Rahman Kamal has allegedly fallen victim to the police’s approach to handling “suspected” individuals, despite not being involved in Awami League politics.
Barlekha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Abul Kashem Sarkar confirmed the arrest, stating that Muhibur Rahman Kamal was arrested as a suspect in a GR case from last year and sent to jail through the court.
