No Possibility of Food Shortage in the Country This Year: Agriculture Advisor

District Correspondent, Sylhet

Agriculture Advisor Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has stated that there is no possibility of a food shortage in the country this year. “By the grace of Allah, we have had good production this year. A sufficient stock of food grains is available. The government has already set the fair price for paddy, rice, and wheat. The price of paddy has been set at 36 BDT per kilogram, rice at 49 BDT, and wheat at 36 BDT,” he said.

He made these remarks on Thursday afternoon while addressing journalists after attending the Boro Paddy Harvesting Festival and an exchange meeting organized in the Gobindapur area of Dekhar Haor in Sunamganj Sadar Upazila. The event was arranged by the District Administration and the Department of Agricultural Extension.

Media personnel present at the event reported that only a nominal amount of paddy harvesting has started so far. Farmers are concerned about the timing of harvesting due to the possibility of storms and rainfall.

Regarding this, the Agriculture Advisor stated, “If farmers are concerned, the engineers responsible for constructing and maintaining embankments will be equally concerned. The government is taking this issue very seriously.”

He further added, “If any syndicate harms farmers during the sale of paddy, they must inform us. We will take action and ensure everything is resolved.”

The Agriculture Advisor also mentioned that the government is taking strict measures to curb the influence of middlemen. “This time, the government is directly procuring paddy from farmers to prevent middlemen from benefiting,” he said.

The harvesting festival was attended by Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Khan Md. Reza-Ul-Nabi, Sunamganj District Commissioner Dr. Mohammad Ilyas Mia, and other administrative officials.
