Lawyer Killed Mistakenly as Bank Security Guard; 5 Arrested

Moulvibazar Correspondent: The District Police have arrested five suspects in the murder case of Advocate Sujan Mia, a lawyer at Moulvibazar Judge Court. Superintendent of Police (SP) MKH Jahangir Hossain disclosed this information during a press conference at the Moulvibazar District Police Superintendent’s office on Thursday afternoon.

In a written statement, the SP explained that there was a prior feud between Agrani Bank’s security guard Misbah Rahman and the murder’s planner, Nazir Mia Mujib. Due to this enmity, Nazir Mia planned to kill Misbah. He hired hitmen through Lakshan, one of the arrested suspects, in exchange for money. Nazir Mia sent a photo of the target to the hired killers via mobile phone.

On the day of the incident, the hired killers mistakenly identified Advocate Sujan Mia as Misbah at a trade fair. They called Nazir Mia and informed him that they had found the person in the photo he sent. Nazir Mia then confirmed the target via a video call made through Abdur Rahim, one of the attackers. After confirming that the target resembled the photo, Nazir Mia ordered them to proceed.

On April 6, around 11 PM, near a fuchka stall in front of the municipality, the attackers brutally stabbed Advocate Sujan Mia multiple times with sharp weapons, mistaking him for their intended target. He succumbed to his injuries on the spot.

Following the incident, the victim’s brother, Enamul Haque Sumon, filed a murder case (Case No. 15) at the Sadar Model Police Station.

The SP further stated that after the case was filed, the police collected CCTV footage from various locations and used technology to track down the culprits. On Wednesday, the primary planner of the murder, Nazir Mia Mujib, son of Shamsul Haque from Khalishpur village in Sadar Upazila, was arrested. Four others involved in the incident were also arrested: Md. Arif Mia, son of deceased Sijil Mia from Raghnandanpur village; Hossain Ahmed Sohan, son of Ansar Mia from Dishalok area; Lakshan Naidu, son of Mona Naidu from Mathiura Tea Garden, Rajnagar; and Abdur Rahim, son of Md. Rafiqul Islam from Kashipur Purbo Para village in Kendua, Netrakona district.

The police are actively working to arrest other suspects involved in the murder. While the identities of the other attackers have been determined, their names are not being disclosed at this stage to maintain the integrity of the investigation.

The press conference was attended by Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) Nobel Chakma, Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Model Police Station Gazi Mahbubur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of District Detective Branch Zafar Hossain, and other district police officials.
