A violent clash erupted between multiple villages in Bahubal Upazila, Habiganj, over the purchase of a motorcycle battery. The conflict later spread to 12 villages after announcements were made via loudspeakers, with torches lit to rally people into the fight. At least 50 people, including police officers, were injured in the clash and received treatment at Bahubal and Habiganj Sadar hospitals, as well as other locations.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night in Mirpur Bazaar. In the initial attempt, police failed to control the situation. Eventually, a joint team of the army and police brought the situation under control.
According to police and local residents, an argument broke out between Akash from Baniagaon village and a resident of Chargao village over the purchase of a battery. As news of the altercation spread, residents from both villages armed themselves with traditional weapons and engaged in a violent clash. Several shops in Mirpur Bazaar were vandalized during the conflict.
Amid the clash, announcements were made over loudspeakers calling for support, leading to the involvement of people from 12 nearby villages. Of them, eight villages supported Baniagaon, while four villages sided with Chargao. The clash continued for nearly three hours.
Despite police efforts, they initially failed to control the situation. Eventually, after receiving reports of the escalating violence, the army arrived and, in coordination with the police, managed to bring the situation under control. At least 50 people, including police personnel, sustained injuries in the conflict.
Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zahidul Islam of Bahubal Police Station stated, “The situation has been brought under control. Three police officers were injured in the clash. Additional police forces have been deployed to prevent further violence.”
