A 5th grade madrasa student was sexually harassed while buying chips for her younger sister; Awami League president arrested.

An 11-year-old 5th grade school student was sexually harassed and attempted to be raped while going to a shop to buy chips for her younger sister in Sonagazi, Feni. A shopkeeper named Md. Kamal Uddin (55) has been arrested in this incident. He is the son of deceased Md. Mostafa of Charlamchi village in Amirabad Union of the Upazila and the president of the ward Awami League.
The incident took place at a grocery store in Commander Bazar of the Upazila around twelve noon on Friday (March 14).
The student’s mother filed a case under the Women and Child Repression Prevention Act at the police station in this incident.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sonagazi Model Police Station, Bayezid Akon, confirmed the matter.
According to the case sources, on the day of the incident, the student took 20 taka from her mother and went to the shop in front of the house to buy chips for her younger sister, but the shop was closed, so she walked some distance to Commander Bazar. She went to Kamal Uddin’s grocery store in Commander Bazar and gave 20 taka to buy two chips. As there were no other people around due to Friday, he took the child inside the shop and sexually harassed her by touching various sensitive parts of her body and attempted to rape her. Later, when some pedestrians came down the road in front of the shop, the accused released the victim. The victim returned home crying and told her mother the whole matter. Her mother then complained to the community leaders and the police station.
The accused, Md. Kamal Uddin, was arrested by the police that night in this incident.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sonagazi Model Police Station, Bayezid Akon, said that Kamal Uddin was arrested on charges of sexual harassment and attempted rape of a madrasa student and was sent to court on Saturday.
