In protest against the alleged closure of Habiganj Medical College, a call for a blockade of the Dhaka-Sylhet highway has been announced under the banner of “Samomilito Nagorik Samaj Habiganj” (United Citizens Society Habiganj) on Sunday.
The blockade was announced through loudspeaker campaigns on Saturday afternoon.
On the same day, students of Habiganj Medical College organized a protest rally in the district headquarters and held a press conference demanding the cancellation of the decision to shut down the institution.
Shamsul Huda, member secretary of Samomilito Nagorik Samaj Habiganj, stated, “The conspiracy to close Habiganj Medical College, ignoring the demands of 2.5 million people in the district, is unacceptable. A memorandum has already been submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, and various protests have been carried out. Despite this, it seems the college is moving towards closure.”
In protest, Shamsul Huda announced that the Dhaka-Sylhet highway at the Shaistaganj New Bridge area will be blocked at 11 a.m. on Sunday, severing Sylhet’s connection with the rest of the country.
Students of Habiganj Medical College, during a press conference, stated, “Due to the rigid decision of the interim government’s Special Assistant, Saidur Rahman, the people of Habiganj are about to lose their medical college. If this decision is implemented, it will be detrimental to Habiganj residents. We demand the cancellation of this decision and the immediate development of local infrastructure.”
It is worth mentioning that the interim government recently made a policy decision to shut down six medical colleges, including Habiganj Medical College, which has sparked widespread protests across the district.
