2 arrested in broad daylight robbery in Baralekha Cash and mobile phone recovered

Ashfak Ahmed, Baralekha Correspondent: Police have arrested two robbers involved in the robbery of a businessman and his daughter at gunpoint in broad daylight in Baralekha, Moulvibazar. On Friday (August 1) night, Baralekha police, in collaboration with Shahparan police, arrested them from Tikarpara (Pirer Bazar) area of Sylhet.

According to police sources, the victim filed a case with Barolekha Police Station on the same day of the incident. (Case No. 17 dated 30/07/2025, Section-341/392) A case was filed under the Penal Code. After the case, under the overall guidance of the District Superintendent of Police, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops), Additional Superintendent of Police, Kulaura Circle, and under the overall supervision of the Officer-in-Charge of Barolekha Police Station, Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman Mollah, a special team was formed from 30/07/2025 under the leadership of Police Inspector (Investigation) Md. Habibur Rahman, SI Ratan Kumar Halder and SI Subrata Chandra Das, ASI Fazle Azim, ASI Sultan Ahmed and other members. Then, with the help of CCTV footage and information technology, they identified those involved in the robbery and started the operation. Based on the operation, Barolekha police arrested them from Tikarpara (Pirer Bazar) area of Sylhet on Friday (August 1) night with the help of Shahparan police.

During the operation, various equipment including 99,500 taka stolen, a Samsung smartphone, a knife and a motorcycle used in the robbery were recovered from them.

The arrested are Selim Ahmed alias Anik alias Botla Selim (35), son of the deceased Chan Mia of Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar district, and Sakib Ahmed (25), son of the deceased Manik Mia of Mirmahalla area of Shahparan police station of Sylhet district.

According to the police and local sources, on Wednesday afternoon (July 30), businessman Abdul Ahad Khasru of Shimulia village in Barolekha upazila was returning home on a motorcycle with his daughter Suhada Begum and son Siam Ahmed after withdrawing Tk 2 lakh from Pubali Bank in Barolekha municipality. When they reached the house of Ataur Rahman in Shimulia village, four robbers on two motorcycles stopped them. Then, they grabbed their necks with sharp weapons and snatched Suhada’s vanity bag. The bag contained Tk 2 lakh 16 thousand in cash, a Samsung smartphone, a two-tone silver chain and the victim’s national identity card.

Barolekha police station OC Mahbubur Rahman Mollah said on Saturday afternoon that the arrested robbers confessed to the robbery during interrogation and also identified the plaintiff in the case. The names of two other absconding accomplices have also been released. Their names cannot be released for the time being for the sake of investigation. The operation to catch the absconding accused is ongoing. Hopefully, the entire gang will be brought under the law very soon. Meanwhile, the two arrested accused have been sent to the court. They will be sent to jail after being questioned in the court.
